SEO Audit & Website Analysis: Understand What’s Holding Your Website Back

When your website isn’t showing up in search results, not ranking as well as you’d expected, or traffic has suddenly declined, an SEO audit will help you understand exactly what’s happening. Our website analysis examines both the technical foundation and competitive landscape, giving you clear answers and a prioritised roadmap for improvement.

What is an SEO Audit?

An SEO audit is a comprehensive evaluation of your website to identify factors that may be preventing it from performing well in search engine results. Think of it as a health check for your website’s visibility in Google and other search engines. During an SEO audit, we systematically examine technical elements (like site speed, mobile responsiveness and crawlability), on-page factors (such as content quality, keyword usage, and meta tags), and off-page elements (including your backlink profile and competitive positioning). The goal is to uncover issues that might be holding your website back from ranking well, identify opportunities that you are missing, and provide a clear, prioritised roadmap for improvement. Rather than just generating a list of errors, a quality SEO audit explains what each finding means for your business and which issues actually matter for your specific situation.

Understanding SEO Audits and Website Analysis

An SEO audit might sound technical and intimidating, but at its core, it’s simply a comprehensive health check for your website’s search engine visibility.

Think of it like a medical diagnostic

Just as a doctor runs tests to understand what's causing symptoms, an SEO audit analyses various aspects of your website to understand what's affecting its performance in search.

What Website Analysis Includes

Website analysis goes beyond just looking at your own site. It examines your competitive landscape, understands how your target audience searches for businesses like yours, and identifies missed opportunities.

Diagnosis + Context = Complete Picture

Two Main Components

Technical SEO Audit

  • Can Google find and access all your pages?
  • How quickly do your pages load?
  • Does your site work properly on mobile devices?
  • Are there technical errors preventing pages from being indexed?
  • Is your site structure organised logically for both users and search engines?

Website Analysis

  • How does your website compare to competitors in search results?
  • What keywords are competitors ranking for that you're not?
  • Where are gaps in their strategy you could exploit?
  • What's realistic given your current domain authority and competitive landscape?

The Complete Picture

An effective website SEO analysis combines both perspectives: understanding your website's technical health AND your competitive positioning in search results.

Our Comprehensive SEO Audit & Website Analysis Process

I understand that you need more than just a list of technical issues. You need clear explanations of what each finding means for your business, and which ones actually matter. Here’s what an SEO audit examines.

Comprehensive SEO Analysis

Content is what ranks in search engines, so understanding its effectiveness is crucial. Search engines increasingly prioritise user experience signals when ranking websites. Here are the four key areas we examine in depth.

1

Technical SEO Analysis

Building a solid technical foundation

For each technical issue we find, we explain the business impact, not just the technical problem.
Site Crawlability:
Can search engines access all your important pages? We identify crawl errors, robots.txt issues, and pages that might be inadvertently blocked
Indexation Status:
Which of your pages are actually in Google's index? Are the right pages indexed and wrong ones excluded?
Site Speed & Core Web Vitals:
How quickly does your site load? We assess load time and Google's Core Web Vitals metrics
Mobile Experience:
Does your site work properly on mobile devices? With mobile-first indexing, this is crucial
Structured Data/Schema Markup:
Are you using schema markup to help search engines understand your content?
HTTPS Implementation:
Is your site properly secured and all pages loading via HTTPS?
XML Sitemap & Robots.txt:
Are these properly configured to guide search engines?
2

On-Page SEO Audit

Optimising content for search visibility

We assess whether your on-page SEO supports your actual business goals and target audience.
Title Tags & Meta Descriptions:
Are they optimised for click-through rate from search engine results pages?
Header Tag Structure:
Is your content properly organised with H1, H2, H3 tags?
Content Quality & Depth:
Does your content thoroughly address topics or is it thin/superficial?
Keyword Usage:
Are you targeting the right keywords and using them naturally?
Internal Linking Strategy:
Are you effectively connecting related content within your site?
Image Optimisation:
Are images properly optimised for search (alt text, file size, etc.)?
Duplicate Content Issues:
Are there pages competing against each other or copied content?
3

Content Analysis

Understanding what ranks and why

We identify opportunities to improve existing content and create new content that addresses gaps.
Content Gaps:
What topics or keywords should you be covering but aren't?
Content Performance:
Which existing content is working well and which isn't?
Search Intent Alignment:
Does your content match what searchers actually want?
Content Freshness:
Is content outdated or regularly updated?
Competitive Content Analysis:
How does your content compare to what's ranking?
4

User Experience (UX) Factors

Creating experiences that convert

Using data from Google Analytics and other sources, we identify where user experience might be affecting both conversions and search rankings.
Bounce Rate & Engagement Metrics:
Are visitors finding what they need?
Navigation & Site Structure:
Can users easily find information?
Page Layout & Readability:
Is content well-formatted and easy to consume?
Conversion Funnel:
Are there UX barriers preventing desired actions?

Holistic SEO Approach

A comprehensive SEO analysis examines all four areas together: technical foundation, on-page optimisation, content strategy, and user experience—creating a complete picture of your website's search performance potential.

Signs Your Website Will Benefit From an SEO Audit

You know something isn’t right with your website’s performance, but pinpointing the exact problem can feel like trying to diagnose an illness without any medical training.

Maybe your organic traffic has been declining and you’re unsure why. Perhaps your content team pumps out regular content but it’s not showing up in search results. Or maybe you’ve noticed competitors consistently ranking above you.

Here are some common situations where an SEO audit and website analysis becomes important.

When You Need an SEO Audit

Rapid Decline of Traffic

If you've seen a sudden or gradual drop in your website's traffic, it could indicate technical issues, algorithm updates affecting your site or problems with how search engines are crawling and indexing your pages.

You Redesigned or Migrated Your Website

Website redesigns, platform changes or domain migrations can inadvertently create search engine optimisation (SEO) issues. Even well-executed migrations may sometimes result in broken redirects, lost content or changed URL structures that affect rankings.

Not Ranking For Important Keywords

When you search for terms relevant to your business, your website doesn't appear on the first page or anywhere visible. Meanwhile, competitors seem to dominate these search results.

Google Search Console Shows Errors

You've logged into Google Search Console and see warnings about indexing issues, mobile usability problems or other errors, but you're not sure which ones actually matter or how to fix them.

Get Clarity on Your Website’s SEO Performance

If you’re uncertain about why your website isn’t performing as expected in search results, an SEO audit can provide the answers you need.

Our complimentary audit typically includes:

    • Technical SEO assessment identifying issues affecting your search visibility

    • Review of your GSC and analytics data

    • Initial competitor analysis showing how you compare

    • Identification of your website’s biggest SEO opportunities

    • Prioritised list of what needs attention

    • Honest conversation about whether SEO can help your specific situation

Even if you decide not to work with us upon your consultation, you’ll still gain an understanding of your website’s SEO situation and the steps that can be taken towards improving it.

Common Questions About SEO Audits & Website Analysis

How long does an SEO audit take?

For a standard website with under 1000 pages, our SEO audit typically takes 1-2 weeks from when we receive access to your site and analytics. Larger or more complex websites may take longer. We provide a timeline estimate after our initial review of your site.

We require access to your Google Search Console and Google Analytics accounts. If you have other SEO tools you use, access to those is helpful but not required. We’ll also need your list of priority keywords and business goals, and information about your target audience. For technical audits, we might need limited access to your website backend or collaboration with your developer.

An audit itself doesn’t change rankings as it’s a diagnostic tool that identifies what needs to be fixed or improved. However, if your site has major technical issues, fixing those based on audit findings can sometimes lead to relatively quick improvements.

My free SEO audits provide initial assessment and identification of issues at no cost. For businesses that need comprehensive website analysis with detailed competitive intelligence, implementation roadmaps, strategic recommendations and an in-depth view, please contact me today to discuss the level of analysis that is relevant to your situation.
